Why I don't use Hotmail

I'm an avid user of Google Apps and not afraid to admit it. That goes for mail and calendaring, as well as a few other goodies that come straight out of the box. Admittedly it's not perfect, but there you go. But once in a while I will head back to Hotmail to see how Microsoft is doing in the web-base mail field.

So what can I say? The update of the interface and the new dynamic methods in the background definitely make the experience much more like using a desktop application. But one thing the Microsoft still doesn't seem to have learned, is that the number one pain-point with Internet mail these days is SPAM!

This is something that Google seems to be a trillion times better at handling than Microsoft. I admit that I will get anything up to 100 spam mails a day in my Google account, where the number on Hotmail is only one every few days (This is probably also due to the fact that I hardly use my Hotmail account). But at least on Google they all get pushed directly into the "Spam" folder, whereas in Hotmail they land directly in the Inbox. I then have to mark them as spam and hope that Hotmail learns that I don't want to see such mails in future. Sadly it doesn't.

I know that there is a fine line to be drawn between catching spam and filtering wanted mail into the spam folder (so-called falso-positive results) but I et the feeling that while Google is using a very fine pencil, Microsoft is resorting to a 4" painting brush.

I just know one thing: Until Hotmail gets it's apparent spam problem sorted out, I won't be moving my mail back. Simple as that!
